December last year I wrote about eagerly anticipating 2017 – a fresh start – a new beginning and almost 10 months in it has been all that and more!
The girls and I have picked up the pieces from yet another disruptive period in our lives and not just ‘got by’ – we’ve thrived!
July this year saw an opportunity come my way that I had only ever dreamed could be possible – Contract Milking 180 cows at the base of the Kaimai Ranges – my special place to get away whenever things get too much, or I need to process or just want to go bush with the ridgies!
With only three heifers to calve, I can reflect back on the last few weeks. It has been my biggest challenge ever with the herd new to the farm, the shed and drenching, lots of rain, a crazy amount of breakdowns, learning how to load palm kernel trailers, mastering spring rotation planners and grazing management and riding a quad bike on steeper country than I was used to, but there is still no place I’d rather be – working on the land close to nature and going home to a warm house, hot spa and a cold beer.
It has truly been the best calving ever surrounded by love and support and positivity rather than abuse!
The divorce certificate that recently arrived in the mail meant an end of that deleterious chapter in my life.
Onwards and upwards!
The grass is growing, the cows are milking well and the farm is looking great and with my own horse-shoe shaped pond I have found my Oasis of Wellbeing!
